Tamilarasu Printing Press

In ancient times, the kings used to announce and inform the people through the Drum (Murasu) from the palace.
❖ In the past, all the announcements, plans, news, etc. were written on palm leaves and silk cloth, and they were read and made known to the people by the palace servants.
❖ After that, the Tamil magazine ‘Swadesamitran’ was started in 1882 with the aim of educating the public to gain political awareness by the learned scholars and leading them to excel in their individual lives.
❖ The magazines themselves were a great inspiration and guide in making the people aware of political consciousness, social consciousness, and national consciousness, and in learning about their mother tongue Tamil, their homeland Tamil Nadu, and society.
❖ Later, 18 magazines were published by government departments, some of which were weekly, monthly and quarterly magazines, and some were given away for free, and people read and benefited from them.
❖ Later, in 1969, a request was made to Muthamilarignar Kalaignar, who was the Minister of Information, to consolidate all these magazines and publish them as the only official magazine of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
In accordance with that request, with the good intention of bringing public welfare services to the people of the country, Muthamilarignar Kalaignar undertook the work of merging the various magazines that were being run by all departments and converting them into a single magazine under the name ‘Tamilarasu’ on behalf of the Department of Information and Public Relations.
❖ Due to the work undertaken by Muthamilarignar Kalaignar, on the evening of Monday, July 30, 1970, at the function held at the Nehru Stadium, Chennai, the magazine ‘Tamilarasu’ was launched by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Muthamilarignar Kalaignar on behalf of the Department of Information and Public Relations.
❖ A government order was issued stating that the Director of Information and Public Relations would act as the editor of both the Tamil version and the English version of this magazine, and the work began and it has been published as a bi-monthly magazine under the name ‘Tamilarasu’ as a publication of the Department of Information and Public Relationsof the Government of Tamil Nadu on 01.07.1970.
❖ Later, in 1989, after a gap of ten years, the great Tamil scholar Kalaignar returned as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and within six months, the book reached sales of 70,000 copies.
The Tamilarasu magazine continued to publish various news such as programs attended by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, public welfare schemes, government ordrs, press releases, announcements, programs attended by Hon'ble Ministers and dignitaries, programs held in the district, stories, articles, Iniyavai Irupadu written by Muthamilarignar Kalaignar, travel articles, literature such as Kuraloviyam and Sangam Tamil written by Muthamilarignar Kalaignar, interviews with those who benefited from welfare schemes, Muthamilarignar Kalaignar's golden sayings, and various news such as the sacrifices of national leaders were printed in black and white so that the public could read and benefit from them, and thus aroused the interest of the people in reading.
❖ Since 1970, only the front and back covers were printed in offset printing, and the inside pages of the magazine were printed in letter press printing.
Since 1974, the cover pages and all pages have been published in offset format.
Based on the demands of the Department of Information and Public Relations to set up a separate ‘printing house’ and office for the ‘Tamilarasu’, which was emerging in this way, the new Tamilarasu office and printing house building, built at an estimated cost of Rs. 6.53 crores, began functioning in 2015 in Taramani, Chennai.
❖ Furthermore, a four-color web offset machine with new technology was purchased for Rs. 4 crores for the new Tamilarasu printing house, giving the magazine Tamilarasu a new look.
❖ The ‘Tamilarasu’ magazine, which had black and white pages and was created by the Muthamilarignar Kalaignar, is now printed and published in multi-color with a new look to stimulate the interest of the readers.
❖ The magazine ‘Tamilarasu’, which was founded with the immense enthusiasm and efforts of the three Tamil scholars, started with a circulation of 30,000 copies and increased to 40,000 and then to 50,000. However, after the reign of the three Tamil scholars, the number of subscribers to the magazine fell drastically due to the fact that the people in power for the last 10 years ignored the magazine.

According to this report, the Tamilarasu magazine, which was on the rise during the reign of Muthamilarignar Kalaignar, was operating with 33,381 subscribers as of 06.05.2021. After many years, the Tamilarasu magazine, which has been carrying out the work of bringing government news and government schemes to the people easily, should be read and benefited by all the people. After the Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru. M.K.
