In ancient times, kings used to announce important messages to the people through the sound of the Drum (Murasu) from the palace. In those days, announcements, plans and news were written on palm leaves and silk cloth, and palace servants read them aloud to inform the public. Later, in 1882, the Tamil magazine ‘Swadesamitran’ was started by learned scholars to educate the public and create political awareness. These magazines inspired people and guided them towards political consciousness, social awareness, national unity and pride in their mother tongue Tamil and homeland Tamil Nadu. Subsequently, about 18 magazines were published by various government departments. Some were weekly, monthly or quarterly publications and many were distributed free of cost so that the public could benefit from them.
